Another very common misconception is that Buddhism is for old people. This is very much not the case and this mistaken idea comes about because most people consider the practice of Buddhism to be things such as reciting the Buddha’s name and making offerings. However, this is not the entire content of the Buddha’s tradition. Really, the essence of the Buddha’s teaching is wisdom and compassion and these are things which young people are equally in need of as those who are older. For example, these days there are many university students, perhaps upwards of 40%, who find themselves under great pressure, experiencing depression. The Buddha’s teachingson compassion and wisdom, and the meditation techniques found in these teachings, are all capable of bringing great relief to such young people. Therefore Buddhism is something that is equally appropriate and necessary for those who are younger in age.
