If we are beginners to Buddhism and just embarking on the path, then we must recognise that we are on the first floor and that we need to get in the lift and ascend from there. The “first floor”, or the first level of practice as beginners, is contemplating the “four thoughts that turn the mind”, also known as the four common preliminary practices. The objective of engaging in the four common preliminaries is to generate the mind of renunciation.
