After we learn what is meant by each of these four thoughts—the preciousness of human existence, impermanence and mortality, the shortcomings of samsara, and karma and its consequences—it is necessary that we reflect on them time and again. Simply knowing these four thoughts in theory is all well and good but without actually having sat down and reflected on them in meditation, we will not have internalised them to the extent that they are capable of transforming our behaviour or our lives, and bringing real benefit.
