The first thing that is extremely important is that we have an accurate understanding of what it means to be a student of Buddhism. To study Buddhism simply means to study the Buddha’s example. What is meant by studying the Buddha’s example? Again this is very straightforward: study the Buddha’s wisdom and study the Buddha’s compassion. Whether we are discussing the sutra tradition or the esoteric tantric tradition, these two fundamental values of wisdom and compassion are exactly the same. The different traditions may express themselves differently, and there may be differences in their practices, but ultimately these are the two common, fundamental points.
